SUCCESSES
Some of the accomplishments and results of the Jackson County Community Services Coalition are:
2001
- Completed a survey of approximately 4,000 6, 8, 10, 12 grades in Jackson County establishing baseline use of alcohol/drug use by youth in Jackson County
2002
- The Jackson County Community Services Coalition was chosen as the Outstanding New Agency by the Mississippi Center for Nonprofits and the Clarion Ledger in June 2002
- Partnered with the Sun Herald newspaper as part of their Fighting Back prevention task force targeted at informing the public about the problems of substance abuse in South Mississippi; to date over 45 stories have been published relating to substance use and prevention; the newspaper won numerous national awards for their eight day series during Red Ribbon Week 2002
- Chosen as a Drug Free Communities Support Program site by Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention
2003
- Hosted the national trainers of the Rapid Response Team to assess the current situation in Jackson County and work with Coalition members to develop a strategic plan to combat underage drinking
- Received grants to implement an after school art program with the Boys and Girls Clubs at several locations
- Selected as a MAP Grantee to combat underage drinking in Jackson County
2004
- Initiated the program, FOCIS (Focus on Children in Separation) for divorcing parents with children. A court-ordered program for many couples seeking a divorce that have children ages 5 - 18. The classes are provided to minimize the negative impact on the children.
- Partnered with the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics and the Home of Grace to present 9 trainings on the topic of methamphetamine and four on ecstasy; this included numerous TV appearances and newspaper and TV coverage for Jackson County; Other topics have also been covered totally over 20 seminars addressing alcohol and drug issues.
2005
- Partnered with Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College to raise the initial funding for the successful construction of the ROPES Course for MGCCC's Outdoor Recreation Program
- Served as a central receiving station for clothing, first aid items and other necessities shipped from 35+ states in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
- The Coalition's youth group assisted in hurricane clean-up in Pascagoula, Pass Christian and Long Beach.
- Coalition staff taught the evidence based program, Project Northland, in the four school districts of Jackson County to middle school students
2006
- Partnered with U-Haul International in bringing appliances to the Mississippi Gulf Coast in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina
- Coordinated multiple out-of-state first responder teams to locations in Jackson County for debriefings during post-Katrina operations
- Developed the Jackson County daycare listing for daycares in Jackson County with a grant from Mercy Corp International
- Hosted Cinderella's Closet for young women attending Senior Prom to receive a free evening gown. 300 gowns were donated by a dress store in Terry, Mississippi. All 13 high schools on the Mississippi Gulf Coast were represented and more than 275 evening gowns were given to the girls.
- The Coalition was recognized nationally by the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) for its hurricane recovery response and assistance during post Katrina operations
- The Coalition staff worked in four school districts teaching evidence based prevention on the dangers of underage drinking
2007
- Developed Solution Oriented Stress Training (SOS-Training) for the Singing River Hospital Systems employees in the aftermath of post-Katrina recovery
- Partner with 20+ small business, corporate and non-profits in renovating homes that suffered damage from Hurricane Katrina
- The City of Pascagoula's employees began stress management training
- Assisted in forming the Southern Coalition, a group of non-profits, state and local agencies with the objective of educating youth on making healthy choices
- Staff instructed students at MGCCC (Jeff Davis and Jackson County campuses) on the dangers of Club Drugs
2008
- Awarded a Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant from the Mississippi Department of Mental Health, Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Abuse to combat underage drinking and other illicit drugs
- Partnership with the Southern Coalition as additional agencies joined in educating youth on making healthy choices

2009
- 28 Prevention Specialists from the state of Mississippi were trained by Coalition staff in Gulfport for the evidence based program, Project Northland
- Stress management training completed with Ocean Springs Board of Alderman and employees
- Participated in 14 health fairs on the Mississippi Gulf Coast
- Staff worked within two school districts teaching Project Northland, an evidence-based underage drinking program.
2010
- Recognized by the Foundation for the Mid South, Minds Matter for the Stress Management Course developed by the Coalition staff in 2007
- Partner with the Cancer Center, Singing River Hospital Systems in working with clergy outreach
- Staff taught middle school students stress management skill building techniques
- 14 Prevention Specialists from the state of Mississippi were trained by Coalition staff in Jackson for the evidence based program, Project Northland
- Awarded funding through the Mississippi Department of Mental Health in partnering with the Southern Coalition teaching stress management to agencies and municipalities along the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
- Participated in 17 health fairs on the Mississippi Gulf Coast
- SPICE, 47 Days; JCCSC and its Southern Coalition members partnered with the Multijurisdictional Counterdrug Task Force Training

2011
- Awarded funding from the Mississippi Department of Health for Senior Citizens to complete the Chronic Disease Self Management Program
- Staff instructed middle school students on the dangers of underage drinking and other illicit drugs through the Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant from the Mississippi Department of Mental Health, Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Abuse
- Stress management training for Jackson County employees, City of Moss Point employees, City of Ocean Springs employees
